By Betty Mydland Hopefully you have not watch any prison movies lately as what they show is not all that typical in most institutions today. Once the judge has pronounced sentence, one of two things happens before you leave the courtroom. One, you will be given a date to return to court to submit yourself for transport to a DOC facility, OR, you will be escorted from the court room by the bailiff, in handcuffs, and taken to a holding cell where you will await transfer to the state reception/diagnostic center. Once at the reception center there are usually several steps that you will go through before being sent to a facility that you will serve out your time. Of course, the very first thing that gets processed is finger prints, your name, birth, conviction, sentence, and any other verifiable information that will be used to determine you from anyone else in the system. You will be issued clothing and bedding. Many states also have you take a delicing shower before admitting you into the population. If this is your first time in a state facility, it can be unnerving as you enter the dorm or cell of assignment. Like the first day in a new school, everyone is interested in the NEWBIE. Who are you, where are you from, what are you in for, how much time did you get and do you know so-in-so? Depending on the state, your time at the reception/diagnostic center can range from 4 to 12 weeks. During this time you will be given a medical exam to determine any special needs, checked for the HIV virus, or any other STD that you may have. You will also be seen by either a psychologist or psychiatrist to determine your mental health which also contributes to determining which facility you will serve out your time. Towards the end of your stay at intake, you will be informed as to what state facility you will be transferred to. Of course, some inmates are slated to serve their time at the intake center. One major thing to remember from the get-go is YOU do your time DONT let your time do you.
